Twenty-three makers, and how we choose them

No catalogue, no logos on the temple. Every maker on the wall is one we have visited or worked with for years.

Ana Sousa

A nine-metre oak wall of glasses frames lit by shelf lights, an optician placing a frame at the far end.

There are 412 frames on the wall, from twenty-three makers. Most are small workshops: a family in Sabae, two brothers in Copenhagen, a horn cutter in Devon.

We choose frames for how they fit, how they are hinged and how they age. Then we try them on ourselves for a month before they go on the wall.

Sizes for real faces

We stock every shape in at least three sizes, from XS to XL. A good frame in the wrong size is still the wrong frame.
